  • On Being a Writer

I'm indie at heart. Always have been, always will be, no matter how I'm publishing.
It's a question of spirit.

INDIES FOR INDIES: Indie authors and readers have a special connection, a shared love of the power and freedom of what it means to produce and create independent of outside forces. I think it's easy to understand why indie music artists are also some of the most powerful, extraordinary talents out there and why we support them. So I want you to meet my friend Troy Ramey. He used to be with a sickeningly good band called IN LIKE LIONS, and I fell in love with his voice from their first CD. Troy is now producing his first solo album, and I'm beyond excited for his music to ready for us.

TROY: No one has a voice like Troy. No one. He brings immeasurable emotion to every note, every lyric, so much so that I am moved to the core every single time that I listen to his music. I feel it rip through me, chase me, nearly bring me to my knees. I get choked up, I smile, I swoon, I worship. I believe in Troy fully,

LEFT DROWNING: As I was writing Left Drowning, and writing Sabin, I thought of Troy often. The emotion that he brings to his musical sound and to the lyrics he writes are very much in line with the emotion and power in Left Drowning. And then I realized something: Troy is Sabin's voice. He really is. Music is always important to me when I write, but never more so than when I was writing LD, and I built a playlist around that book, which included "Ho Hey" by The Lumineers and "Age of Worry," by John Mayer.. I listened to both songs on REPEAT while writing. this book! "Ho Hey" is from the scene in which Blythe is running behind Christopher's truck and and Sabin in singing (and screaming!) at her, and "Age of Worry" is the song Sabin sings to Blythe early in the book. Troy generously recorded his own versions of these songs for us., and I'm so impressed with what he's done.

RESTLESS WATERS: So, I was already in love with Troy and his music, but then...but then he slayed me when agreed to write a song specifically for RESTLESS WATERS. I knew that Sabin needed to deliver music and lyrics from his heart, and I also knew that Troy could capture that. And he did. From the moment I heard even early, rough versions of "Coward," it was clear how special this song was. I've had so many people write me to say how inspiring this song is, how it's pushed them through tough times...That's what beautiful music and words can do, and so many of us are grateful to Troy and his talent and his willingness to bare his soul and create such a powerful song. Listen on Spotify or iTunes! Trust me, Coward will blow your mind and your heart in the most wonderful way.

He also generously contributed so many lyrics from his songs to RESTLESS WATERS, and then did amazing recordings, so please give him some listen and love. Click on the songs to purchase on iTunes or find him on Spotify: Daisy, City Lights, Lucky Ones, Restless Lady, Song Man, When The Lights Came, Rosary, and Sheets .
"COWARD" LYRICS:
I’M NOT A COWARD, BUT I DID NOT FIGHT. BEEN IN THE SHADOWS ALL MY GODDAMN LIFE.
TIME TO HEAR MY CALL.
D
O YOU REALLY KNOW ME?
N
OW, IT’S TIME FOR ME TO SHED SOME LIGHT. OUT OF THE SHADOWS, I’LL FIGHT THIS FIGHT. I CAN NO LONGER LIVE A LIE.

THIS WORLD SEEMS TO OFFER ME NOTHING. SUPPOSE I SHOULD FADE AWAY,
B
UT YOU KNOW I’M NOT RUNNING, RUNNING AWAY.

CAN YOU HEAR MY CALL? IT’S SO LOUD. CALL ME A COWARD IF YOU LIKE. I’M NOT PROUD. CAN YOU FEEL MY HEART? IT’S SO COLD. CALL ME A COWARD IF YOU LIKE. I WON’T FOLD.

"Age of Worry" is one of my most mega rad super forever favorite songs, and Troy delivers Sabin's version to perfection. Listen and sob...
